What is carbon footprint?

Carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases that are generated by our actions. It includes gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, expressed in equivalent tons of CO2. In corporation level, carbon footprint determines the emissions from across its operations, directly or indirectly. It is a significant measure of the company’s impact on the environment.

Why is calculating carbon footprint important?

Greenhouse gasses emission into the atmosphere is causing global warming. Based on data from NASA, Earth’s average surface temperature in 2023 was the warmest on record since recordkeeping began in 1880. Overall, Earth was about 1.36 degrees Celsius warmer than in the late 19th-century preindustrial average. In keeping the Earth from getting warmer faster, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the 2015 Paris Agreement, understanding where the greenhouse gas emissions come from is essential. Therefore, we can take effective and targeted action to reduce emissions.

How do we do the calculation?

Our calculation follows GHG Protocol framework to measure and report greenhouse gas emissions, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 calculations.

  • Scope 1 includes fuel usage and refrigerant
  • Scope 2 includes purchased electricity
  • Scope 3 includes wastes, purchased goods, travel and commuting, suppliers
Who needs to use the calculator?

Anyone who is curious about their impact to the earth. From guests, hotel staff, corporate and government, clients, travel agencies, and everyone. This tool is designed to be friendly and accessible, even for people with no technical background.

How to use the calculator?

Simply go to our Calculator page, choose the Hotel, choose which service you want to calculate (stay/event), input the details on the date, duration, room type, and total number of person, and click Calculate. The result is ready in seconds. You may print it directly or save as PDF for reference.

When to use the calculator?

You can use the Carbon Footprint Calculator before, during, or after your stay or event.

How to read the results from the carbon footprint calculator?

From the calculation results, you will get Total Emissions of your stay or your event and Emission per Person. The emission value is expressed in kgCO2e.

kgCO₂e means kilograms of CO₂ equivalent, which is a simple way to show how much different types of pollution warm the planet. Because some gases are stronger than others, everything is converted into the same carbon dioxide unit so the number tells you, “This has the same warming effect as X kilograms of CO₂.” This makes emissions easy to compare and understand.

Can I count the footprint of my hotel or enterprises?

Jayakarta Hotels & Resorts and Ametis Institute are collaborating to provide a carbon footprint calculation program that can be used by business operators, whether in the hospitality industry or others. Contact Us for more information.
